Nerves Are Normal
Almost every learner experiences some anxiety before their driving test. But nerves don’t have to hold you back. With the right mindset and preparation, you can stay focused and drive your best.
1. Know the Test Format
One major source of nerves is uncertainty. Your driving instructor will walk you through exactly what to expect:
Show-me / tell-me questions
40–50 minutes of independent and examiner-led driving
1 manoeuvre and possibly emergency stop
At Ilker Driving School, we practise test routes across Chingford, Loughton, and Wanstead, so nothing catches you off guard.
2. Do a Mock Driving Test
A mock test is the single best way to simulate the pressure of the real exam. You'll get used to being observed in silence and managing test-style conditions — which lowers anxiety.
3. Use Calm Breathing Before & During
Right before the test:
Inhale for 4 seconds
Hold for 4 seconds
Exhale slowly for 6 seconds
This resets your nervous system and keeps you grounded.
4. Think Like a Confident Driver
Remind yourself:
You've done this route before
You know how to handle roundabouts, junctions, and manoeuvres
Your driving lessons have prepared you well
Imagine how proud you’ll feel when you pass.
5. Don’t Fixate on Mistakes
If something goes wrong during the test (e.g. you stall), don’t panic — it doesn’t always mean you’ve failed.
Stay calm, correct it, and carry on.
Many students in Wanstead and Loughton passed even after small errors, simply because they stayed composed.
Bonus Tip: Choose the Right Time and Location
Test centres in Loughton or Wanstead may be quieter at mid-morning or early afternoon
Book a driving lesson right before your test to warm up
Let your driving instructor drive you there to reduce stress
You're Ready — Even If You Feel Nervous
It’s okay to be nervous. But remember: you’ve trained, practised, and improved. Trust yourself, trust your instructor, and drive like it’s just another lesson.
